A little more than a week ago, Pete Rose said he might apply for reinstatement (to baseball’s good graces), which was his right one year after getting the thumb, as early as last week. . . . It has been a long and painful eight years without baseball for the game’s greatest hitter. It probably has been punishment enough. To be sure, the NFL restored the eligibility of Paul Hornung and Alex Karras after kicking them out a year for wagering on its games. Baseball never has reinstated anyone defrocked for gambling. The feeling here is that Pete Rose can apply for reinstatement tomorrow, next month or the next millennium. It won’t make a difference. He’s done.
