Thank you for a fair and unbiased editorial concerning the proposed renovations to Halsted Street (Aug. 19). Frankly, I was surprised that the Tribune, whose history of tolerance is spotty at best, supported the project. Although you stopped short of complete acceptance, you presented the issues, economic as well as social.

It is true that the gay and lesbian community has been a large part of the development and success of the Lake View area. Property values have increased substantially over the last 10 years, gay- and lesbian-owned businesses are thriving and all of the community, both gay and straight, benefits.

I have seen the plans for the renovation, and I think they are sophisticated and well thought out. They do not provide the “circus atmosphere” that some seem to think.

There will always be some group that will oppose any city project, unless, of course, it advances their financial or social well-being, and I’m sure this project will have even louder voices of opposition than some of the other recent endeavors. The gay and lesbian community, however, is used to fighting for any and every recognition, regardless of how deserved it might be, so I’m sure this project will not be resolved without many battles.

In the end, as you so succinctly put it, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but this project has the look and feel of a winner, and it deserves to be such.
