I am writing to express our profound disappointment with the Tribune for printing Gene Wojciechowski’s column of Aug. 20 (“If the karma is right, Garnett could be a Bull”).
The column is replete with stereotypes and inaccuracies about the Asian Indian community. Wojciechowski attributes culture and customs without regard for an appreciation of the distinction between people from South Asia and the Middle East. He uses speech patterns that convey a notion that Asian Indians are foreigners, thus reinforcing beliefs that some groups in our society may be “less American” and less welcomed than others.
Wojciechowski’s attempt at humor at the expense of insulting the Asian Indian community is shameful. The Tribune should have known better and owes an apology to the Asian Indian community and to all its readers who were offended by this unfortunate portrayal.
