Two women were killed and two men seriously injured Monday morning in a head-on collision on the Stevenson Expressway, police said.
The accident happened about 6 a.m. near the Dan Ryan Expressway interchange when a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina speeding southbound in the northbound lanes struck a 1985 Plymouth, said Illinois State Police Capt. George Murray.
Chicago Police Department spokesman Paul Jenkins said city police received a call from the Union Pacific Railroad at 5:40 a.m. reporting a theft in progress from one of its rail cars near 27th Street.
The report said a white Chevrolet Cavalier was involved, Jenkins said. When police arrived, a white Chevrolet Lumina was pulling away, but it was not clear at the time whether it was the car in question, Jenkins said.
The Lumina went up a nearby exit ramp of the Stevenson Expressway, and the collision occurred within 10 minutes, Jenkins said. There was never any pursuit of the Lumina by police, he said.
The only passenger in the Plymouth, Maria Del Socorro Perez, 39, of Chicago, was killed, Edwards said.
A woman passenger in the Chevrolet died. A fire in the car has complicated identification of her body, Murray said.
The Lumina’s driver, Calvin Milons, 29, for whom no address was available, was listed Monday in serious condition at Cook County Hospital, a hospital administrator said. Milons suffered burns, several broken bones and internal injuries, Murray said. He was under guard and will be questioned later, Murray said.
The Plymouth’s driver, Edwardo Perez of Chicago, for whom no age was available, suffered massive trauma and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital Medical Center, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Larry Edwards. Perez was listed Monday afternoon in critical condition, a hospital administrator said.
Murray said witnesses indicated that a third person in the Chevrolet rolled out of the wrecked car and limped away. Police were searching for that man, Murray said.
The northbound and southbound lanes of the Stevenson Expressway were closed for three hours.
