The Northern Illinois Special Olympics softball team clinched its first-ever state championship for Division II.

“It was an excellent way to end the season. They (the players) were excited,” said Dana Seehafer, who has coached the team for seven years.

The state tournament team consisted of Angee Ball of Cary; Patrick Witschi, Bill Noller and Wayne Borth of Woodstock; Paula Richardson, of Wauconda; James Williams of Lake in the Hills; Kevin Short of Crystal Lake; Mark Doerr, John Yung and Ray Pifer of McHenry; and Chris Mattea of Marengo.

The team, which plays in a mid-ability level division, completed the season with a 9-2 record., including area tournaments.
