Parents, teachers and children around Wisconsin will get a chance to comment on a draft of statewide educational standards released by the governor Monday.

The standards spell out the English, math, social studies and science concepts children should master by 4th, 8th and 12th grades.

For example, 8th graders would be expected to read, interpret and critically analyze literature, read and discuss literary and nonliterary texts to understand human experience, and read to acquire information, among other skills.

The social studies standards include identifying significant people and events in U.S. and world history and analyzing values such as freedom, democracy and justice.

Gov. Tommy Thompson said Wisconsin — consistently at or near the top in national academic tests — needs the standards to stay competitive.

“We are going to set the state model and we’re expecting every school district to meet that model,” Thompson said at a news conference at Stoner Prairie Elementary School in Verona.
