So editorial board members oppose U.S. Rep. Sonny Bono’s proposed paparazzi law (Sept. 29). They fear selective prosecution. They think that a law-abiding majority should not be punished and restricted for the acts of a criminal few. They believe the 1st Amendment is precious.

I agree. But isn’t it ironic, though, that when the National Rifle Association advances the same arguments in defense of the 2nd Amendment, the Tribune labels it as extremist, fanatic and out of touch with reality?

Currently the media are under attack because of the Princess Diana tragedy. The Tribune should regard Rep. Bono’s bill as a warning. The 1st Amendment can be restricted just as quickly as the 2nd. These amendments are the pillars on which all American freedom is built. If either were lost, the other could be eliminated by government decree, with no recourse. I ask the Tribune to reflect on the importance of all freedoms and use caution before advocating restrictions.
