After the firing of Sox manager Terry Bevington, former third base coach Doug Rader told the Tribune’s Phil Rogers a story that, if true, ought to bring the full weight of Major League Baseball down on the heads of the Sox organization (Tribune, Oct. 1). Rader told Rogers that during the 1997 season, Sox Vice Chairman Eddie Einhorn “called down to the dugout in the middle of a game and wanted some of the coaches to make sure the pitcher leaves the ball on the mound in the next inning because he’s involved in some pool and wants to win it.”

The Major League Baseball Players Association ought to demand an investigation. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an office of the commissioner to undertake such a serious inquiry.
