Nearly two dozen students at Round Lake Community High School were suspended Friday for violating a student dress code that prohibits the wearing of jackets, hooded sweatshirts and other “outer wear” in classrooms.

The suspended students were part of an organized protest to a decision by school officials earlier this year to strictly enforce the dress code, said Principal Margaret Egebrecht.

“We have to enforce the dress code we have in place, and one item (bans) jackets and other outer wear that’s normally worn outside,” the principal said.

“No matter what we did, there were more than 20 students who simply wouldn’t comply,” she said, noting that officials offered some students a clean shirt to avoid the 1-day suspension.
