Robert C. Speth (Voice, Oct. 18) says, “The animal-rights movement has declared war against the use of animals, claiming all uses of animals are cruel.” He refers to raising animals for fur, noting that ranch mink live healthier lives and suffer less painful deaths then they would in the wild.
He’s right. It’s not so much the pain animals suffer that bothers those people; it’s the fact that we use them at all.
What annoys me most about the animal-rights fanatics is their opposition to medical and scientific experimentation. If they had the courage of their convictions, they would each carry a card (like an organ donor card) saying: “If I am found injured or sick, don’t give me any surgery developed by animal experimentation, or any medicine tested on animals. My life is not worth any more than an animal’s, so I don’t want to live at the expense of any animal’s life. Just let me die.”
Don’t hold your breath.
