Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who is trying to steer his communist country through difficult economic reforms, on Friday visited the bastion of capitalism to meet U.S. business leaders eager to make deals in the world’s largest market. Jiang, snubbed by New York political leaders in protest over China’s human rights record, rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange at the end of a volatile week for traders. Brokers and clerks on the exchange floor mostly cheered, but there were some scattered boos for Jiang, who stood on a balcony overlooking the floor with exchange officials at his side. Before the opening, Jiang shouted “good morning” to traders. After ringing the bell, he smiled and gave a thumbs-up sign. He strolled briefly around the floor and then left for his next engagement
