The board of School District 20 on Thursday night voted to renew a before- and after-school tutoring and enrichment program that was offered for the first time last year at Spring Wood Middle School.

Supt. Anthony Przeklasa announced that following the successful pilot of the program a year ago, which included only 7th graders, the program will be expanded to include 6th and 8th graders.

“We’re anticipating the program could include as many as 12 teachers who will receive an extra salary stipend for the position,” Przeklasa said.

The program began after school officials examined first-quarter grades and noted a number of students were performing poorly.

“We made the program completely voluntary,” said Robert Klapproth, business manager.

The program will be conducted from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students also may elect to receive assistance before school on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
