George N. Harig Sr., 76, a retired executive in the office products industry, spent 52 years in his field, including many years as general merchandise manager for the Order from Horder’s chain.
A resident of Northbrook, he died Sunday in Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview.
“He was a very sincere and very hard-working man who put in the extra hours to get the job done,” his son, George Jr., said. “He built its catalog and had the reputation of knowing the numbers for all the products Order from Horder’s stocked.”
Mr. Harig started in the business as a delivery boy in 1937. He remained with Order from Horder’s through acquisitions, rapid growth and 13 chief executive changes. He became general manager of the firm in 1964 and later general merchandise manager.
After he retired, he was hired by United Stationers to work on special projects.
Survivors, besides his son, include his wife, June; another son, Rick; two daughters, Vicki Swanson and Sue Janssen; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Hanekamp Funeral Home, 835 Waukegan Rd., Northbrook. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Norbert Catholic Church, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook.
