Young Illinois drivers will face a new and tougher, three-tier graduated driver’s license system beginning Thursday.
The new system still will have a learner’s permit for 15- to 16-year-olds and a full license for those age 20 and older. But sandwiched in between will be a new graduated stage license for all drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 who have had their learner’s permit for at least three months.
The new license will require new drivers age 16 and older to spend at least 25 hours practicing their driving skills with a parent or guardian.
“If you are under 18 and receive two moving violations, you have to go back and take remedial training classes behind the wheel,” said David Urbanek, spokesman for the Illinois secretary of state’s office.
Two moving violations for drivers younger than 21 bring a 30-day suspension, he said.
