When it comes to country outlaws, few can challenge this wildly eccentric artist’s credentials. Heck, Coe’s life is a country song. Missing in action far too long, this album was recorded at Billy Bob’s Texas before a rowdy crowd of diehard fans. Clearly, the singer-songwriter’s vocal gifts have greatly diminished, but he still manages to showcase some of the best country songs written in the last 25 years (“Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone),” “Long Haired Redneck,” “Take This Job and Shove It,” “You Never Even Called Me By My Name,” “If That Ain’t Country”). This album won’t make anyone forget Coe’s stellar — if erratic — studio work from the ’70s, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun.
