In his Dec. 25 article “Poor carp gains pity as Czechs mark annual feast”(Main news), David Rocks correctly described the traditional Christmas Eve meal (fried carp and potato salad) but neglected to mention that this meal is a mere interlude to the more festive traditional dinner served on Christmas Day.
My qualification on this subject is the fact that I have spent Christmas in Prague for more than 20 years.
On Christmas Day the Czechs look forward to consuming geese and ducks that have been well fed and are the equivalent of our plump turkeys. (Side dish: dumplings and cabbage.)
And although one can understand the protesting of injustice in general by a people who lived in oppression under two regimes, it seems odd to hear complaints by activists (animal-rights and environmental) when the subject is carp.
Certainly the Czechs have many other important issues to resolve.
