Refreshingly innocent, pleats evoke images of schoolgirls, cheerleaders and ’50s coeds. Or of Deauville in the ’20s and romantic styles from the “Chariots of Fire” fashion era.

For spring, designers have pressed pleats into action. Marc Jacobs has based his collection on them, teaming knife-sharp skirts with cashmere tank tops. Donna Karan takes a relaxed approach to pleats, lightly crushing them into organza evening skirts.

In the hands of minimalist Helmut Lang, pleats on layered organza skirts serve as a form of austere ornamentation. Given his influence, this is a sure sign that pleats will be welcomed into the fashion fold for several seasons to come.
