Schools in Elk Grove Township School District 59 are earning pennies–which add up–through a special program with Mobil Oil.

Participating gas stations donate a penny for each gallon of gas sold on certain days. For example, every Tuesday, a penny is donated to Clearmont and Rupley Schools for each gallon.

The schools receive a check each quarter based on the sales and can use the funds for programs or equipment. Clearmont, which earned $1,200 last year, recently used the money to purchase cross-country skis for students.

Clearmont’s program is with the Mobil station at 1699 Landmeier Rd.; Rupley’s is with the station at Arlington Heights and Higgins Roads.

Friendship Junior High School in Des Plaines is paired with a Mobil station at 800 W. Oakton Ave. and received nearly $3,000 last year, which will be used for student awards, field trips and a reading incentive program.
