Fenton hit 16-of-18 free throws in the fourth

quarter as the Bison sealed a 53-34 victory over host Elk Grove Wednesday night.

Fenton (10-7) got only its second win after losing star post player Sarah Schwarz, who was averaging 19 points a game before suffering a torn knee ligament early in the season.

“We have a team where everyone has to contribute for us to win,” said Fenton’s Sarah Mikuls. “We want to show that we can win without Sarah.

The Bison started out strong hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter and outscoring Elk Grove 19-6 in the quarter.

In the second quarter Elk Grove (3-12) fought back as it broke the Fenton press and held the Bison to two points and no

field goals. Diana Ruiz scored six of her eight points in the second quarter to help the Grens pull within 21-20 at the

half.

That’s when Mikuls took over.

The aggressive guard nailed two three-pointers and had four steals as Fenton went on a 10-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Mikuls finished the game with 11 points.

With both teams in the bonus in the fourth quarter the Bison put

the game on ice. Andrea Dee was 6 of 6 from the line and finished with a game-high 15 points.

“We practice so hard at free-throw shooting, it really paid off

today,” Dee said.

Fenton coach Tim Anderson stresses the importance of free-throw

proficiency to his team. He believes his team will continue to step up and play hard going into the conference season.

“Our strengths are defense and foul-shooting,” Anderson said. “I have some good kids and they did a lot of good things on the floor tonight.”
