A civil lawsuit against the railroad involved in a massive train derailment and fire at Weyauwega two years ago ended in a settlement Thursday for 31 people seeking damages.

The case went to trial Tuesday in Waupaca County Circuit Court. Judge Joseph Troy announced the settlement between the plaintiffs and Wisconsin Central Ltd. early Thursday afternoon following a closed-door meeting with the two sides.

“In the face of a jury coming back we were able to reach a satisfactory settlement for both parties,” said attorney John Cabaniss, who represented the plaintiffs, adding that a confidentiality agreement prevented him from giving any details, such as the amounts involved.
