Maywood trustees are giving second thoughts to a proposal that would have ended the right of village residents to comment at board meetings.

Trustees voted last week to ask the Public Relations Committee to find an alternative forum for public comment. Some officials said the portion of the meeting devoted to public comment had become a gripe session.

Critics denounced the proposal, saying they feared that trustees would stifle free speech by eliminating the long-standing practice. As a result, the Public Relations Committee recommended that residents be allowed to address agenda and non-agenda items for 20 minutes before each regular meeting.

The board of trustees is expected to vote on the measure at Thursday’s meeting, to begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, 125 S. Fifth Ave.
