I continue to read articles about the U.S. Postal Service and how proud and pleased it is that the department is making a profit (Main news, Dec. 27).
I can’t believe the service would waste its time and your space making such comments public. That it has raised the price of postage high enough to offset its inefficiencies is the only reason it is able to make a profit. It has lost most of its parcel business due to poor service and/or price and would have lost its letter-carrying business were it not protected by federal law.
If the Postal Service would really overhaul its department and run it as an efficient business operation, the price of a stamp could be reduced substantially while still showing a sizable profit.
