Schaumburg residents may get a break on village fees for voluntary home inspections when it comes to appliances that include air conditioners, water heaters and furnaces.

Currently, the village charges $40 for most inspections, but Trustee Pat Riley said a decrease in fees would motivate more homeowners to replace old and potentially hazardous appliances.

At this week’s Finance, Legal, Administration and General Government Committee meeting, members decided that residents will only pay $10 for the inspections.

“The Village of Schaumburg is in excellent shape, and this is an opportunity to give a little of that back to the folks,” said Riley who added that for some residents, “$40 is a big deal.”

If the appliance is not installed correctly, safety issues become a concern. Riley predicted the decrease in fees would encourage residents to call for an inspection.

In other action, the cost of setting up an arts and craft booth at Schaumburg’s three-day Septemberfest may go up.

Committee members approved a $50 increase for each booth. If approved by the Village Board next week, exhibitors would have to pay $250 for space at the late-summer festival.

Last year the village received more than 1,000 applicants vying for the 250 booth spaces.
