The Streamwood Village Board on Thursday night approved a $9,237 out-of-court settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over waste oil, which a village contractor allegedly dumped in southwest suburban Lemont.
In November 1996, the village was named as a potentially responsible party to the Superfund cleanup at Lenz Oil Services Inc. in Lemont.
In 1980, 1981 and 1983, the Streamwood Public Works Department hired a contractor to remove waste oil left from municipal vehicle oil changes. The contractor allegedly dumped it at Lenz Oil.
“Three deliveries allegedly were made by the Village of Streamwood to the site,” said Village Atty. Michael K. Durkin.
Because the amount of oil attributable to Streamwood was small, the EPA offered to settle without going to trial, village officials said.
The village will pay $6,170 to the U.S. EPA and $3,067 to the State of Illinois. The village will be exempt from further liability and other potential lawsuits involved in cleanup.
