The plan to redevelop Ft. Sheridan for civilian use has been approved by members of the Highwood and Highland Park Joint Plan Commission, wrapping up public hearings that began in November.
The redevelopment plan will be considered for approval by the Highwood and Highland Park City Councils before the Department of Defense can transfer the first parcel of the fort to the two cities. The transfer is tentatively scheduled for February.
A joint city council meeting to sign the plan into law will be scheduled for next month, officials from the two cities said.
The land would be sold for $5.3 million to developer Richard Stein, the prime mover behind the project. Eventually, 591 homes would be built on the former Army base, including an eight-story condominium building.
