Got traded, became great, won a Super Bowl. You know, just like the magic the Bears have worked with Rick Mirer.

ON THE JOB

Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren said that if the Seattle Seahawks called to offer him a dual job as coach and general manager, he would be interested. This distraction comes as Holmgren tries to win his second straight Super Bowl.

Funny how the Bears don’t have to deal with those kinds of distractions.

GOING PLACES

Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman told WSCR-AM afternoon hosts Terry Boers and Dan McNeil that he knows the Bears have problems, “but I still believe Dave Wannstedt is the right man for the job” as Cowboys coach.

Bears fans would hate to lose Wannstedt to Dallas. They’d rather lose him to Green Bay.

THE NICE ITEM (WITH FOUR GOLD STARS ICON)

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov, recovering from serious head injuries sustained in a limousine wreck seven months ago, is making progress. In fact, he showed off for his teammates.

“We were told he never walked more than 25 to 30 steps,” trainer John Wharton said, “but he walked 75 feet with us, and he kept smiling and looking back while he was doing it to make sure we were all watching.”

He scoots, he scores!

FOX TROT

San Diego Padres owner John Moores said he’s inclined to vote against Fox network master Rupert Murdoch’s bid to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers because of the “opportunity for considerable mischief,” like greatly inflating salaries.

Responded Fox spokesman Vince Wladika: “If you’re talking about running salaries up, I think the owners have done a good enough job of that without our help.”

Wait, you mean Albert Belle and Sammy Sosa weren’t worth $10 million to $11 million?

DONE DEALS

The Kansas City Royals signed aging reliever Lee Smith and creaky third baseman Terry Pendleton. No lie.

Makes the White Sox’s moves look good, whatever they were.

NICE GOING, EH?

The Toronto Blue Jays have an off-season caravan deal like the Cubs and White Sox. It started last weekend in Vancouver. Only two writers showed up, and the Blue Jays couldn’t figure out why.

Turns out, there was an event called the NHL All-Star Game out there.

Do the Blue Jays understand they’re in Canada?
