With the recent tragic deaths of tourists in Italy caused by U.S. Marine pilots possibly acting in a reckless manner, I call on our United States Sens. Carol Moseley-Braun and Richard Durbin to act on reducing our military presence in Europe.
Why should we provide for the common defense of Europe when those countries have formed an economic union and the threat of Soviet invasion is gone? When our schools, public transit systems and workers need funds, why do we pay for errant fighter jocks to zoom around, videotape their acts and, unfortunately, cause harm?
The immature behavior of these pilots is just like the mind-set at the Pentagon–people playing with toys, accountable to no one, and spending almost $300 billion each year preparing for fantasy war scenarios.
Senators, please bring the troops home. Reel in the military-industrial complex. Cut the military budget. Pocket the money. Make the world a better place.
