After several moratoriums on the construction of telecommunications towers, the Village Board Wednesday night approved an ordinance governing the structures.

The rules state that the towers can be no taller than 125 feet and must be at least 200 feet from the perimeter of the property on which they are situated. In addition, the company building the tower must place in escrow with the village an amount of money equal to 125 percent of the cost of maintenance for 10 years plus the cost of removal. There also is a clause saying that obsolete towers must be taken down.

“The ordinance doesn’t say you can’t have a tower; it says where we’d like them to be,” Trustee Joyce Frayer said.

Farmland would be the best location for a telecommunications tower, Frayer added.

There are two telecommunications towers in the village, and there are no applications pending for new towers.
