A proposal that would raise state limits on damage awards in wrongful-death and medical-malpractice lawsuits won Senate backing Thursday.
The measure would raise the maximum for non-economic damages such as pain and suffering to $500,000 in the death of a minor and $350,000 in the death of an adult.
The current limits are $150,000 for wrongful death and $350,000 for medical malpractice.
The Senate passed the bill on a voice vote and sent it to the Assembly.
The legislation is called the Justin-Lindsey bill after Justin Millar, 11, and Lindsey Schultz, 13, both of Menomonie.
Justin died two years ago Thursday, said his mother, Patty. The boy died a few weeks after receiving an allergy shot.
Lindsey bled to death after an appendectomy two years ago.
