Alonzo Spellman’s life took a bizarre turn last week. On Monday, the day he was to take a random steroids test, the Bears defensive end (left) barricaded himself inside a house. That caused a 10-hour standoff involving a SWAT team. (Spellman wasn’t armed or anything, but other authorities were out dealing with snowstorm problems.) Ex-Bear Mike Singletary came and talked Spellman out of the house.

Spellman was taken to a hospital and agreed to stay for 72 hours and take a steroids test. But last Tuesday morning, he walked out of the hospital and was found walking barefoot along the highway. He was talked into returning to the hospital.

As of last week, there wasn’t one main story on what was up with Spellman. There was talk that he was worried about being traded and that he needed rest. But even Singletary said, “I still don’t know the entire story.” Family members and friends were trying to see that Spellman got whatever help he needed.
