In Diana Butler Bass’ essay (“The joy of not feeling guilty after giving up on Lent,” March 20), she uses a religious theme to confess that she loves chocolate and can’t give it up, even for Lent. She’ll do anything else, she says: pay close attention to sermons, attend extra services, plant a garden. But she cannot, she will not give up the wicked fruit of cacao.
I can sympathize. I gave up chocolate for Lent this year, and I’ll never do it again either. I can barely wait for Easter, when I will ravenously chomp off the ears of the nearest chocolate bunny. Next year maybe I’ll write an essay about how I suffered through another Lent by abstaining from macaroni and cheese.
