The Waukegan Park District might have a role to play in the redevelopment of downtown Waukegan, the district’s executive director said late Tuesday at the board of commissioners meeting.

Like most central areas, downtown Waukegan doesn’t have much green space. But soon, there might be an opportunity for the park district to build a small park, said Greg Petry, executive director.

Plans being put together by the Waukegan Downtown Association call for a small park to be built near Madison and Genesee Streets as part of a transit corridor.

The park could include extensive landscaping, areas for recreation and even a skating rink for winter use, Petry said.

“It’s just a concept at this point,” Petry said. “It could be a little like the plaza at Rockefeller Center in New York.”

The park could probably be built with state and federal transportation grants that allow some money to be used for building parks in conjunction with transportation developments, Petry said.
