In his story on re-segregation (“Tip of the iceberg,” Op-Ed, April 27), it was nice to see John McCarron examine a suburban issue from a regional perspective.

Such regional coverage is too infrequent. Most suburban coverage focuses only on events within individual communities. Consider that the morning traffic on the Interstate Highway 294 is much heavier going north. Perhaps this is due to good jobs having deserted the (increasingly black) southern suburbs, forcing residents to drive to the west and north suburbs to work. One can only guess, because we don’t see enough stories of regional impact.

Nearly 6 million people live in suburbs that sprawl from Northwest Indiana to McHenry County. The Tribune should provide more coverage of suburban issues of regional significance.
