Although few would oppose the renaming of Lake Shore Drive to Michael Jordan Drive, as John Kass suggests in his May 4 column, I think it would be more appropriate to change the name to Studs Terkel Drive.
Studs, unlike Mike, virtually grew up in Chicago. His book “Division Street: America” can be considered an urban classic reflecting the knowledge and understanding he has of this city. And as for the working man whom Kass, with his Southwest Side orientation, so adores, I think no one shows more respect and understanding than Terkel does in his oral histories.
Certainly basketball alone, even with a great man like Jordan as its symbol, is not representative of the culture of our city as is the unpretentious Studs and his works.
