Richard Eitel, 36, of Naperville, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for breaking into a neighbor’s home in the middle of the night and attacking a 5-year-old girl in 1992.
Eitel was sentenced to 45 years in prison, but the state appellate court ordered a new trial after prosecutors used improper evidence.
Eitel was convicted again earlier this year. On Friday, he accepted a 30-year sentence and waived his right to appeal the current sentence.
Eitel was found guilty of aggravated battery to a child and home invasion.
At the trial, a DuPage County sheriff’s detective testified Eitel admitted to entering the home and hitting the girl. But while he confessed to the crime, he could not remember committing it. He had a severe alcohol problem at the time of the attack, he said.
