A resolution requesting an increase in the franchise fee collected by Multimedia Cablevision of Batavia Inc. to 5 percent from 3 percent has been approved by the City Council.
The additional money would be earmarked for a new not-for-profit corporation, BATV Inc., being formed with members from the community and city government to oversee local broadcasting on public-access Channel 43 and a future community television studio.
Local programming currently is handled by volunteers working out of space in Multimedia studios. BATV hopes to hire a program director and is looking into broadcasting from space in Batavia High School. The school could then include training at the studio in its curriculum.
