Melvin K. Meyer, former chief of the Homewood Police Department, died Tuesday at his residence in Homewood. He was 77. Mr. Meyer was an Air Force captain during World War II and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross medal for his service as a bombardier. He married his wife Margaret in 1947 and began his career with the Homewood Police Department in 1950. The next year he was promoted to the post of chief, which he held until 1976. Mr. Meyer also served as treasurer and manager of the Homewood Credit Union for 30 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Charles; a daughter, Sarah; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. in Ryan Funeral Home, 18022 Dixie Hwy., Homewood. Services will be in the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m.
