The Des Plaines District 62 school board has adopted a new curriculum that mingles social studies with other subjects such as art, science, economics and technology.
Another component of the curriculum requires most grades to investigate the concept of culture, which will help students achieve a greater understanding of the community, officials said.
A pilot plan introduced to several 5th- and 3rd-grade classes this year exposed about 70 teachers to the program.
The new curriculum will begin this fall in all district schools. Cost for nearly 3,500 student textbooks and teacher materials will not exceed $175,000.
