I was perplexed by Mary Schmich’s May 24 column “Luck be a lottery that isn’t a 1-way ticket to ruin.” I think she was mistaken when she wrote that the lottery makes “the poor poorer by seducing them with false hope.”
Remember, someone always wins the lottery (you’ve got to play to win, as the saying goes). Perhaps Ms. Schmich was thinking about the Clinton administration? It would certainly make more sense if she was.
