A Rosemont-based developer’s third attempt in recent years to build on an 8.2-acre parcel off Touhy Avenue has been approved by the Des Plaines Planning Commission.
The proposal for the Maple Chase subdivision, on the southeast corner of Touhy and Maple Street, calls for 34 single-family homes to be built, with prices to start at $300,000, said Anthony Tantillo, president of Tantillo Homes.
The houses would be built on lots of at least 6,820 square feet, he said. “We hope this third time will be the charm,” Tantillo said.
The proposal still must go before the City Council later this summer.
Last May, aldermen rejected a previous development proposed by Tantillo for the same site. That plan called for 20 homes plus a mini-warehouse project. At the time, several aldermen encouraged Tantillo to develop the property with only single-family homes.
Meanwhile, the City Council, meeting as a committee of the whole, voted 7-0 to accept in principle changes to the city’s zoning map that could ultimately rezone 85 parcels in the city.
The last major change in the city’s zoning ordinance took place in 1960, officials said.
Aldermen also moved to keep the Touhy Avenue corridor, which includes the site of the proposed Tantillo development, zoned for single-family homes. The city staff had proposed small-scale office, restricted commercial and light industrial development for the area.
