Y don’t you understand? Marion Robbins has been a communications specialist at the DuPage District of YWCA Metropolitan Chicago in Glen Ellyn for six years, but she says it’s still difficult to explain what the YWCA is about.

“I can’t tell you the number of times people have told me, `Oh yes, I learned to swim there,’ ” she said. “We don’t have a pool, we don’t have aerobics and, unfortunately, we don’t have a song. That’s the YMCA.”

The YWCA does teach survival skills to women through job training, sexual assault prevention classes and child care lessons. The YWCA does teach women how to stay afloat after crises such as rape or domestic abuse. The YWCA does offer strength training, to tone those emotional, not physical, muscles.

And there is a number to call for help: 630-790-6600.
