The crease will be smaller, the net will be two feet farther out into open ice–13 feet–and life will be tougher for goaltenders under changes approved by NHL governors.

Among other changes approved were:

– Shaving off the “wings” on the crease that stretch beyond the goal posts in order to cut down on goals disallowed because of crease infractions.

– Giving the video goal judge the power to call down to the referee when a crease infringement is seen. The referee retains the right to overrule if he feels the player was pushed into the crease.

Also Thursday, Buffalo goalie Dominik Hasek was named the NHL’s MVP for the second straight season.
