It’s fire that works this season. Designers are lighting the way with a hint of glimmer and a whole lot of glamor–especially via accessories. The old-fashioned varieties (think Hollywood in the ’50s) are back. But stash the good stuff in the safe, or just pretend it’s there. This time out, rhinestones will get that second glance.

For fall, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel serves up his stones nested in silver mesh on bracelets and belts; Sonia Rykiel likes hers lined up boldly on a flashy watch fob or clustered in constellations of star pins. Try them for night or play them up for day. This shining example of what’s to come for fall fashion caught on early with a shimmer in home furnishings and a flash on summer sandals. Celebrate your independence and hunt for one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, or scoop up these early arrivals. If rhinestones feel too glitzy, start with something small.

Some dazzle is the perfect complement to fashion’s blue and gray moment. Faking it has never been such fun.
