As artistic and general director of Chicago’s only major professional summer resident orchestra and chorus, I took exception to critic Sarah Bryan Miller’s description of the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra (Tempo, June 25).

Our resident orchestra is full of heavy hitters–first-rate, first-string.

On any given summer evening, the performance level of this resident orchestra is world-class. During the winter season, most of our orchestra members play with other major and regional orchestras throughout the country.

Don’t take my word for it. Ask anyone who saw “The Pirates of Penzance” performance. They weren’t thinking “second string.” They were enthralled.
