Waukegan residents who need a break from the heat can cool off Tuesday at several cooling centers set up around the city.
The City Council chambers at City Hall will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., city officials said. Cold water will be made available to prevent dehydration. City Hall is located at 106 N. Utica St. in downtown Waukegan.
From 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., residents are welcome to beat the heat and learn something new at the same time by taking advantage of the air conditioning at the Waukegan Public Library, 128 N. County St., one block northeast of City Hall.
Senior citizens can cool off at Waukegan Township’s Park Place Senior Center from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on any day that the temperature is predicted to reach at least 90 degrees, township officials said.
“We’ll keep the council chambers open during the day for as long as they’re needed so that people know that they have someplace to go when it gets too hot,” said Waukegan Police Chief Scott Burleson.
