Nine people, including four children, were shot dead in their sleep in the South African town of Richmond in what police said Wednesday was probably another politically motivated attack.

The slaughter late Tuesday brought to 43 the number of people recently killed in the town and stoked fears of renewed fighting in the troubled KwaZulu-Natal province ahead of elections next year.

Richmond has become the flash point in an apparent struggle between the ruling African National Congress and the newly formed United Democratic Movement. Police said the attack followed the pattern of previous killings that have targeted mainly families of political activists.
