News reports last week indicated that President Clinton’s strategists will wait for the results of DNA tests on Monica Lewinsky’s blue dress before they decide what to do next. Has anybody thought about what they are saying by making such statements?
Let me take you through a simple exercise in logic: If Mr. Clinton and his operatives have been telling the truth all along, and Mr. Clinton and Ms. Lewinsky have not had any sexual relations, then they would already know the results of the test–there is no way that the stain on Ms. Lewinsky’s dress can contain any of Mr. Clinton’s DNA.
If on the other hand, they have been lying all along, knowing that Mr. Clinton has had such relations, then they cannot be sure whether the tests will provide positive, negative or inconclusive results.
So why are they waiting for the results?
