No, Clarence Page, an unmarried high school student who decides to keep her baby instead of putting the best interests of her child first–i.e., adoption by a mature, stable, two-parent family–is not showing good character (“Premarital sex and the National Honor Society,” Aug. 9). She is only perpetuating her poor character and compounding her mistake, and she should not be inducted into the National Honor Society, no matter what grade-point average she achieves. (Neither should the father.)

Glamorizing and “normalizing” single parenthood is a detriment to our society as a whole, not to mention the personal detriment to the children themselves.

For these girls to be held up as role models is detrimental to the institution of family and to our society. I hope the National Honor Society continues to show its own good character and uphold the standards that young people should aspire to.
