The Barrington Appearance Review Commission is to make a recommendation to the Village Board this month on plans for a 7,500-square-foot building housing a gas station, food mart, video store and carwash at Northwest Highway and Main Street.

During a recent preliminary review of the project, Commissioner Shea Labecke expressed concern over the full-length glass window in front, and suggested that a red brick border run along the bottom, matching the rest of the facade.

The five-member panel is to discuss the proposal again Aug. 20 and make a recommendation to village officials. The Plan Commission is scheduled to look at the plan Aug. 25.

If the Village Board ultimately approves the $1 million project, partners Shell Oil and Equilon Enterprises hope to break ground next month and finish up by the end of the year, according to project representatives.

A similar plan was approved by the village in 1996 but fell through, primarily because Shell Oil could not get state approval for curb cuts in time, said senior project architect Ronald Ambrose of Warren Johnson Architects in Palatine.
