With the editorial “Protecting kids on the Internet,” you have pointed out the flaws inherent in Sen. John McCain’s proposed blanket solution to this very complex issue. Thank you for recognizing the seriousness with which librarians, teachers and parents are addressing access to the Internet in thousands of local communities today.
As your editorial correctly points out, filtering devices are imperfect, subjective, easily disabled, and they often provide a false sense of security. Encouraging patrons to access the Internet through library-produced Web sites, such as the Chicago Public Library’s www.chipublib.org, and allowing libraries to develop guidelines based upon local needs and desires are far better solutions.
